My animal portraits start with an in-person photo shoot, whenever possible. That way I get to know my models and have a personal connection. I then work to a high degree of realism, avoiding comic awkwardness, or excessive sentimentality. My style is informed by extensive study of the history of art and animal painting, with a strong emphasis on graphic quality that comes from time spent printmaking. Consider having your friend painted on a favorite fine carpet. (There is an add-on fee for this labor.) When studio visits are not possible, I keep my clients informed via e-mail ,with jpegs, for progress reports. It is not uncommon for clients to tear up when they first see their near finished portraits, when that great friend's soul has shown up in the work.
